The coach of Britain's most famous Olympian Steve Redgrave will be the after dinner speaker at the 2000 Scottish Coach of the Year Awards held in Edinburgh this week. Jurgen Grobler, head coach of the British rowing team who guided the coxless four of Redgrave, Matthew Pinsent, Tim Foster and James Cracknell to Olympic victory at this year's Sydney Games will deliver a speech entitled "Going for Gold."
Grobler is regarded as one of the most successful coaches ever on the international stage. As coach with East Germany he guided the rowing team to 7 Olympic and 52 World Championship medals. Since taking over as Great Britain's head coach in 1992 he has overseen Redgrave-led crews win 3 Olympic and 6 World Championship gold medals.
Organised by sportscotland, the special evening takes place at Dynamic Earth, Edinburgh on Thursday 30 November where the winners of the eight categories in the annual awards will be announced. BBC Scotland's Rugby correspondent John Beattie, will present the awards.
Alastair Dempster, Chairman, sportscotland said: "The role of the coach is the vital and often unseen factor behind an athlete or team's success.
"All top athletes will pay tribute to the coaches who first inspired them to get involved in sport, encouraged them to stay involved and helped them maximise their potential. These awards recognise the important role they play in creating a more active Scotland."
