Body Text

Tuesday 14 November 2000

Former Celtic Head Coach, Dr Josef Venglos, and Mike McFarlane, coach of Olympic sprinters Dwain Chambers, Julian Golding and hurdler Tony Jarrett, will be among speakers passing on their expertise to a gathering of around 400 coaches in Glasgow this weekend (Saturday 18 - Sunday 19 November).

Coach 2000 is the biggest event of its type in Europe.  Now in its fourth year, it is a joint initiative between Glasgow City Council and sportscotland.

The two day conference takes place in the Moat House Hotel with practical coaching sessions at venues around the city. The event encompasses a wide range of subjects and speakers and opens with Frank Dick, President of the European Athletics Coaching Committee, on 'Coaching: The Skill for Life'.

Keynote presentations throughout both days are on subjects as diverse as 'Post-Sydney, the Coach's Experience' to 'Movement Skills through Dance' with an international line up of speakers. Other topics being covered include: ethical dilemmas and child protection issues; injury prevention; overtraining; and early diagnosis of sports injuries in horses.

On Sunday morning, Dr Venglos, who is a member of the UEFA Technical Committee, will deliver one of the keynote presentations at the conference on 'Euro 2000: a Coaching Perspective'.  He will also take part in sport specific masterclass later the same day.

Mike McFarlane, who earlier this year worked in the USA with John Smith, coach to World and Olympic 100m champion Maurice Greene, will take a series of masterclasses on 'The development of speed - how to create the fastest man in the world.'

Top Judo coach, Ulrich Klocke, from Germany who has coached World and Olympic champions and who has been responsible for developing coach education systems in Germany and Switzerland, will analyse the techniques of today's most successful judo competitors.
