Caberfeidh Shinty Club in Strathpeffer, one of the oldest shinty clubs in Scotland, is set to receive a sportscotland Lottery award of £100,000 to assist in the construction of a new pavilion.
The award, from sportscotland’s Building for Sport programme will help the club develop the game of shinty within Ross and Cromarty by providing coaching to young people up to district and national standard as well enabling the club to host league games and competitions. The new building, located at Castle Leod playing fields in Strathpeffer, will include changing facilities, meeting rooms, a fitness area and storage. It will replace the existing pavilion which is completely inadequate for the club’s activities as it has no running water or electricity. The pavilion will also be used by Strathpeffer Highland Games Committee, which was formed in 1882, for their events and to storage of their equipment.
The club has been established since 1886 and celebrated its centenary in 1986. It currently has two senior teams, one which plays in the Marine Harvest North Division One and the other in the North Division Two league as well as teams within all age groups of the Camanachd Association’s youth competitions and club members are actively engaged in the coaching of these youngsters. The ‘Cabers’, as they are known locally, have over 100 members and hope that the new pavilion will encourage more young people to join the club boosting their membership and seeing them continue to thrive for many years to come.
Andrew MacMaster, Committee Member, Caberfeidh Shinty Club said: “We are delighted to have received this award from sportscotland. Everyone concerned would like to thank them for this as it will act as the catalyst for us to finally provide a much needed modern facility that will complement the stunning grounds and backdrop of Castle Leod.”
Julia Bracewell OBE, Chair of sportscotland said: “sportscotland recognises that shinty is an important part of the sporting landscape in the Highlands. We are delighted to award this Lottery investment of £100,000, from the Building for Sport programme to Caberfeidh Shinty Club to assist with the construction of their new pavilion.
“This investment is another example of our commitment to providing communities across Scotland with quality accessible sports facilities thereby encouraging more people to participate in sport on a regular basis.”
