sportscotland supports Scottish governing bodies of sport in many different ways, helping them to achieve our shared goals of increasing participation and improving performance. sportscotland is therefore pleased to announce an investment of £99,694 from our National and Regional Facilities Small Equipment Programme to 20 governing bodies to assist with the purchase of essential equipment.
The equipment, ranging from gymnastic landing mats to ski timing equipment, will increase the capacity for the governing bodies to be able deliver events, competitions and training at regional and national level. This will assist Scottish athletes in their training and competitions and will hopefully lead to increased performance at every level.
One of the governing bodies benefiting from a £10,000 investment is Scottish Swimming. The money will be used to purchase equipment to improve the facilities at the pool at HMS Caledonia Naval Base at Rosyth. The pool, which has been recently upgraded, is used by club swimmers as well as Tayside and Fife Institute of Sport athletes but required essential training equipment to create a world-class standard training venue. The equipment includes: an innovative swimmer resistance unit called the ‘Drag ‘n Fly’, a cold tub to assist with recovery training and strength and conditioning equipment.
Also receiving a £4,000 investment is Snowsport Scotland. Their investment will be used to purchase essential timing equipment to allow them to run Scottish races that meet international standards. These standards have recently changed and it is now a pre requisite that all ski races must use this new system. The equipment will be used to run Fédération Internationale de Ski (FIS) races for skiers aged 15+ at the five Scottish snowsport resorts -Glenshee, Glencoe, Lecht, Cairngorm and Nevis Range. This means around 500 people a year will benefit from the new equipment.
Julia Bracewell OBE, Chair of sportscotland said: “Scottish governing bodies are one of our key partners in the delivery of sport in Scotland. We support them by offering resources and expertise, helping them to develop their sport and adapt to the ever changing sporting environment.
“This investment of £99,694 will see the governing bodies able to host competitions, assist our national teams and squads in their training and preparation and allow them to comply with changes in rules and standards. This will see them continue to evolve, maintaining their position as, strong, self-sustaining organisations.”
