Only one sport can claim to have won a medal for Scotland at every Commonwealth Games since 1930, and that’s boxing and today sportscotland is announcing it’s largest ever annual investment in Amateur Boxing Scotland Ltd (ABS) of £205,000 for 2007, to try and keep this amazing record going.

This investment, of which £175,000 is from the sportscotland Lottery Fund, will go towards organisational development, player improvement and medal success, maintaining sportscotland’s role as the biggest supporter of the sport.
Sports Minister Patricia Ferguson said: “Scotland has an impressive record in boxing competitions, and this latest investment will hopefully lead to further medal success for our boxers.”
Part of this investment has enabled the ABS to strengthen their coaching structure with the appointment of two national coaches to work in the development and performance areas of the sport. Peter Harrison, father and trainer of former WBO featherweight champion Scott Harrison, is the new national development coach with Kevin Smith, former head coach of the Golden Gloves amateur boxing club, becoming the national performance coach.
The appointment of Peter and Kevin will ensure that the player pathway within Scottish Amateur Boxing is being supported from grass roots to elite and that Scotland’s boxers are given every opportunity to continue achieving at the highest level.
Kenny Anderson’s gold in the light heavyweight event in Melbourne, continued Scotland’s Commonwealth Games success in the ring and brought the total number of medals won by Scottish boxers to 36, 9 gold, 13 silver and 14 bronze.
Julia Bracewell OBE, Chair, sportscotland said: “Scotland has a tremendous boxing history, especially at the Commonwealth Games and we see this funding providing the platform from which to build continued success.
“The appointments of national performance and development coaches is a huge boost to the sport and will strengthen the player pathway at all levels from grassroots to elite.”
Alan Dryburgh, ABS President said “ sportscotland’s continued investment in amateur boxing has allowed us to appoint two National Coaches. We are looking forward to working with both Peter Harrison and Kevin Smith in their respective roles.
