sportscotland continues its mission to enhance sports facilities across the length and breadth of the country with an investment of £114,045 in two communities in Dumfries and Orkney. The two Lottery awards from sportscotland’s Building for Sport programme focus on the creation of new quality changing facilities. sportscotland see this as a priority as it is essential for the development of sport at grass roots level.
One of organisations benefiting from an award of £42,500 is Lochar Thistle Youth Football Club in Dumfries. The award will assist with the creation of a new football pavilion with changing rooms, committee room and storage, following the demolition of an existing temporary facility. The new pavilion will allow the club to cater for the increased numbers of boys and girls waiting to join the club, increasing participation in football in the local area. When built, the new pavilion will complement the current full-size football pitch and floodlit training area the club have.
Trevor Wilson, Secretary and Treasurer, Lochar Thistle Youth Football Club said: “This award is the culmination of nearly two years preparatory work and thanks to sportscotland we can look forward with confidence to building our new pavilion and allaying any fears over segregation of sexes and storage of our equipment.”
Also receiving an award of £71,545 is Holm Community Association in Orkney. The association plan to build a new two team changing pavilion sited adjacent to a recently constructed new grass football pitch. The pavilion will provide the local football club with quality changing facilities allowing them to host matches. It will also be used by the whole community and will be a focal point for sports participation within the local area, as it will be available for rugby and athletics training as well as local sports days and galas.
John Muir, a Trustee of the Holm Community Association said: “The announcement by sportscotland of this very substantial funding towards our sports pavilion is very much appreciated. A playing field with ancillary facilities has been an ambition of the people of Holm for some considerable time. sportscotland’s award of £71,545 will go a long way to help us achieve our aim to provide a first class amenity for the benefit of locals and visitors wishing to participate in team games, gala days and individual sporting activities.”
Julia Bracewell OBE, Chair of sportscotland said: “Quality, accessible facilities are vital if sport is to thrive in Scotland. There needs to be the right quality and mix of facilities to encourage people in their local communities to participate in a range of sports, on a regular basis, as well as supporting those with aspirations to compete at a higher level.”
“sportscotland is pleased to be supporting these two projects in Dumfries and Orkney with this investment of £114,045 providing quality changing facilities, which we see as a priority in developing grass roots sport in Scotland.”
