sportscotland funding puts skatepark wheels in motion

Body Text

Thursday 22 May 2008

Skaters and bikers in Glenrothes are set to have a bespoke skatepark thanks to a sportscotland investment of £74,000.  The funding will assist with the construction of a concrete skatepark in Riverside Park in Glenrothes, which will meet the growing needs of local skateboarders and wheeled sports enthusiasts of all ages.

The skatepark will cater for skateboarders, in-line skaters, roller skaters and BMX bikers, from beginner level to advanced users, as well as being used for competitions. In addition a streetskate area will be incorporated into the design to mimic obstacles found in streets such as kerbs, ledges, rails and stairs.  The skatepark will also have floodlighting allowing it to be used in the evenings, providing more opportunities to improve fitness and skills levels, as well as discouraging anti‑social behaviour.  The project has the support of the whole community in particular local young people who have helped develop the design of the park.

The skatepark project is a partnership between Fife Council and The Stefan Drummond Appeal/Riverside Skatepark Group.  The Group, set up following the death of young Glenrothes skater Stefan Drummond, have been fundraising and generating support for the creation of the skatepark as a memorial for Stefan.

Councillor Brian Goodall, Chair of the Housing and Communities Committee, said: “We have consulted widely with young people in Glenrothes and taken on board their views as to the design style and location. The match funding from sportscotland will enable us and our partners to provide a quality facility for ad-hoc and competition use.”

Stewart Harris, Chief Executive, sportscotland said: “sportscotland is delighted invest £74,000 to assist with the creation of the new Riverside Skatepark in Glenrothes, providing the local young people with a purpose-built facility to help develop their skating skills.

“By supporting projects such as this sportscotland hope to encourage more young people to take part in sport and increase physical activity levels as well as fulfilling our commitment of providing communities across Scotland with quality accessible sports facilities.”
