sportscotland’s mission to enhance community sports facilities across the country continues with an investment of £208,876 in an upgraded pavilion and pitch project at Seedhill Pitches in Paisley and a new clubhouse for Isle of Skye Clay Target Club in Portree.
Renfrewshire Council will receive an investment of £200,000 to assist with the major refurbishment of the existing Seedhill pitch and pavilion complex in Paisley. The project includes the provision of a new third generation synthetic grass pitch and three new five-a-side multi-courts, as well as upgrading three grass football pitches, cricket wicket and pavilion.
The sports facility at Seedhill is an extremely important one for the local community. The new and upgraded facilities will be used by a number of local clubs and schools. In particular, the facilities will be used by active schools staff from local schools to deliver a whole range of activities including sports festivals. This will provide the link to community activity, increasing the participation opportunities for young people within the local community.
Welcoming the investment, Sports Minister Stewart Maxwell said: “Through sportscotland, the Scottish Government is committed to improving facilities for communities across the country and encouraging more people to get involved in sport. This funding will give the people of Paisley and Skye great local venues to be proud of.”
Councillor Eileen McCartin, Convener of Renfrewshire Council's Community and Family Care Policy Board, said: "We're delighted at this funding award from sportscotland which will help us complete our investment in improving leisure facilities in the east end of Paisley. Our proposal is bringing significantly increased school and community access to high-quality sports facilities, a major part of this is the restoration of the pavilion and the construction of synthetic pitches at Seedhill . This supports our Active Renfrewshire strategy which focuses on improving access, participation and performance in sport and leisure, and also reinforces our ambitions for Renfrewshire as the "Gateway to the Games" in advance of Glasgow's Commonwealth Games of 2014."
Also receiving a sportscotland Lottery investment of £8,876 is Isle of Skye Clay Target Club in Portree. The investment will assist with the construction of a new log cabin style clubhouse, which will be key to the future success of the club, allowing it to develop and grow. Once the clubhouse has been constructed the club also plan to improve the traps and layout, developing shooting access for disabled participants and allowing the venue to achieve competition status.
Announcing the investment, Louise Martin CBE, Chair of sportscotland said: “This investment of £208,876 from sportscotland’s Building for Sport programme demonstrates our commitment to helping communities provide good quality, accessible facilities that meet their local priorities. This is vital if sport is to thrive in Scotland.
“sportscotland is delighted to be supporting these two great community projects, which will widen sporting opportunities locally, increasing participation in a range of sports and supporting those with aspirations to compete at a higher level.”
- Launched in March 2004, the Building for Sport Programme (BfS) is divided into two strands: Community Facilities and Training and Competition Facilities.
- Applications for the Community Facilities Programme covers the provision or upgrading of facilities for the local community.
