Lottery continues investment in developing Scottish potential

sportscotland continued to invest in the development of Scotland’s sporting potential with the announcement today of the latest round of Talented Athlete Programme awards.
Through the sportscotland Lottery Fund, over 90 sports men and women will benefit from this month’s awards totalling over £470,000.
Included in this round of awards are athletes from the following sports: athletics, archery, bowling, curling, cycling, equestrian, hockey, ice skating, orienteering, rowing, shooting, swimming, taekwondo, tennis, trampolining, weightlifting and wrestling.
The awards help towards sports costs such as equipment, sports science, coaching, travel and competition and, in a very limited number of cases, actual subsistence.
Alastair Dempster, Chairman of sportscotland, said: “Sport 21 - Scotland’s strategy for sport - sets out the challenge of establishing Scotland as a country achieving and sustaining world class performances in sport.
“Through the sportscotland Lottery Fund we have been able to play a major role in helping to achieve this.
“Sporting success can unite and inspire our nation and be a catalyst for getting more of the population active and participating in sport.
“Today’s announcement is a further investment in the future sporting health of our nation and in developing the potential and desire to succeed at international level that Scotland has always had but never fully realised.”

- Over £6 million has been invested in Scotland’s top athletes by the Lottery Fund through its Talented Athlete Programme over the past two and a half years and currently support is given to around 500 of our leading athletes across 40 sports.
- All aspects of Scottish sport have benefited from over £100 million awarded by sportscotland Lottery Fund since March 1995, including youth and school sport, coaching, major events, community sports facilities and equipment.
