Milestone year for sportscotland and Scottish sport

Wednesday 27 October 1999

'When we look back in ten years time, 1998/99 will be seen as a milestone in the development of sportscotland and Scottish sport,’ stated Chief Executive, Allan Alstead, at today’s launch of the new sportscotland Annual Report.

This will be the period which not only saw sportscotland launch an £8.1 million youth sport package of support which will touch the lives of all Scots youngsters, but also announce and lead the establishment of the Scottish Institute of Sport which is set to transform the support available to our talented sportsmen and women.

Internally, this dynamic period has seen the appointment of our new Chairman, Alastair Dempster, and a rebirth of the organisation under its new name, sportscotland, to reflect its changing work, particularly since the introduction of the National Lottery.

Externally, we have seen the introduction of the Scottish Parliament with sportscotland at the forefront of making the case for sport and raising awareness of the significant contribution sport can, and already is, making across our society,’ he added.

Moving away from the standard Annual Report format, the publication lists succinctly and clearly sportscotland’s contribution over the past 12 months towards achieving the three complementary visions of  Sport 21: Widening Opportunities; Developing Potential; and Achieving Excellence.
