Sport goes back to school

Tuesday 21 September 1999

Five more local authorities and three individual schools have signed up to sportscotland’s bid to get more youngsters more active more often, it was announced today.

Under the Lottery funded School Sport Co-ordinator Programme, over 70 more schools across Scotland will benefit from a dedicated part-time co-ordinator whose role will be to broaden sporting opportunities in schools.

"If we are to begin to improve the health of the nation we must start to improve sporting opportunities from an early age."

Over 60,000 pupils from areas including Aberdeen, Dumfries and Galloway, Dundee, East Ayrshire, Glasgow, South Lanarkshire and West Lothian will have the opportunity to experience more sport under the guidance of a co-ordinator at their school one day a week.

Co-ordinators will be responsible for managing and developing sports programmes over and above curriculum-based sport, working closely with pupils and encouraging them to get more involved in sport and get fit.

The co-ordinator will also organise development and education programmes for teachers and coaches, as well as establishing links with community clubs and associated primary schools, in order to integrate school sport with sport in the wider community.

Alastair Dempster, Chairman of sportscotland, said:  ’If we are to begin to improve the health of the nation we must start to improve sporting opportunities from an early age.  That is why one of the aims of sportscotland is to have a co-ordinator in place in every secondary school by the year 2003.

Getting co-ordinators into schools will have a big impact on the areas involved by enhancing the activities currently available in the schools.  The delivery of sporting provision in schools will be changed significantly.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

The School Sport Co-ordinators Programme was originally run on a pilot basis by sportscotland in several Scottish schools.

As well as youth and school sport, sportscotland also supports talented athletes, coaches, major events and sports facilities and equipment through its Lottery Fund.
