Cash boost for Scots medal winners
Saturday 27 August 2000
sportscotland today announced a cash boost of almost £1/2m for Scottish sports men and women, including many of the young athletes who picked up medals in the first Millennium Commonwealth Youth Games, held two weeks ago in Edinburgh.
Awards have been made to 87 athletes through sportscotland Lottery Fund's Talented Athlete Programme, which assists top athletes and those with the potential to perform at the highest level.
The Commonwealth Youth Games medal winners who are benefiting this month include:
- Edinburgh fencer Liz Wright, who won Scotland’s first gold medal of the Games in the women’s individual event, and her team-mate Nicola Ramsay, from Carluke, who picked up bronze. Both girls also won bronze medals in the team event.
- Gold medal winning gymnast Craig Barry and quadruple Bronze medallist,15 year old Michelle Denholm.
Ian Robson, Chief Executive of sportscotland, said: "Developing and supporting our talented athletes at all levels is crucial if we want to build a strong foundation for future success.
"Financial backing means that an athlete does not have to worry about paying to get to a competition. He or she can concentrate on doing their best, hopefully bringing home medals, and, most importantly, inspiring future generations of sports stars."
- The Talented Athlete Programme provides financial support to top performers and to athletes with the potential to perform at the highest level. Awards are based on the standard of performance and reflect the level of cost incurred by the athlete. Athletes who are eligible to represent Scotland or the UK at junior or senior level, who are committed to a specific sport and who have met the appropriate international standards of performance, may apply for funding under this programme.
- There are currently around 500 athletes on the programme from 40 different sports.
- A full list of this month’s Talented Athlete awards is below.
- In addition to supporting top athletes, sportscotland also invests Lottery money in youth sport, coaching, major events and sports facilities, and supported the inaugural Millennium Commonwealth Youth Games with an award of £100,000.
