Christmas comes early for top Scots
Thursday 21 December 2000
Providing some pre-Christmas cheer, sport scotland has announced over £100,000 of lottery-funded support for more of Scotland's top sporting performers.
In the latest round of awards under sport scotland Lottery Fund's Talented Athlete Programme, elite athletes in aquatics, archery, athletics, equestrian, disability sport and skiing will receive funding.
Ian Robson, Chief Executive, sport scotland, said: "Success in sport now requires more than just raw talent.
"If we want to see Scots winning at the highest level we need to be able to provide support for their coaching, training and competition costs. These awards give the athletes an opportunity to fulfil their potential, by putting a greater focus on preparation and ultimately helping them to achieve excellence in sport.
"Success for Scots at the highest level, like we saw this summer in Sydney, also acts as an inspiration for the nation. At sport scotland, we are seeking to get more people to appreciate the benefits of a healthy lifestyle by being more active, more often."
Among the athletes receiving funding are:
Edinburgh swimmer Ian Edmond who smashed two Scottish records at the recent European short-course Championships in the 200m breaststroke and 100m medley, where he finished 5th and 8th in the finals.
Archer Simon Needham of Montrose, who owns the British Record and finished 17th in the recent Sydney Olympic Games.
Double Olympian, Ian Mackie of Fife, who is aiming for success at the 2001 World Athletics Championships in Edmonton, Canada and beyond at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester.
The Talented Athlete Programme was formed by sport scotland to provide support for athletes performing at the top of their sport and those with the potential to succeed. To date, over £8m has been awarded under the programme, helping athletes with sports related costs such as travel and coaching, and in some cases providing a subsistence allowance to allow athletes to take time off work.
