Hole in one for local club

Thursday 23 March 2000

Members of Alness Golf Club are set to celebrate the official opening of their upgraded course and clubhouse, with the help of sportscotland’s Lottery Fund.

After five years of hard work by Club members, the community of Alness can now enjoy an extended 18 hole golf course and modern clubhouse.

Formed in 1904, membership of the previous 9 hole course was stretched almost to capacity.  The new facilities will now allow the Club to accommodate and attract new members.  Junior facilities are also included and it is hoped that this will encourage more local young people in the area to take up golf.

Allan Alstead, Chief Executive of sportscotland, said:  “The provision of good quality sports facilities close at hand is vital if we are to persuade more people to take up sport.

“The new clubhouse and course at Alness will be beneficial for the local community not only in terms of increased adult membership but also in the number of young people it is hoped will be attracted to the sport.”

Mrs Betty Taylor, Secretary of Alness Golf Club, said:  “When the project first started it seemed an impossible task.  With funding from sportscotland Lottery Fund, however, everything fell into place.  Without that support we would never have achieved what we see here today.”

  • The opening of Alness Golf Club will take place on Saturday 25 March at 1700 hours.  For further information telephone Mrs Betty Taylor on 01349-883877
  • You and your representatives are invited to attend.
