Lottery win for local school - Dumfries

Monday 21 August 2000

Ahead of the start of the new school year, a local school is to benefit from an injection of National Lottery funds.

St Joseph’s College in Dumfries has received an award of £9,140 (over three years) from sportscotland Lottery Fund to help fund the appointment of a School Sport Co-ordinator.

The job of the co-ordinator is to increase sporting opportunities for school children by developing extra-curricular school sport and integrating it with sport in the wider community.

The work that the co-ordinator will undertake will include: developing the extra-curricular school sport programme; organising teacher and coach education programmes; working closely with community clubs and associated primary schools; and monitoring participation levels.

Ian Robson, Chief Executive of sportscotland, said:  “All children should be encouraged to take part in sport and recreation.  As well as the obvious benefits to their health, sport can also promote confidence, form friendships and offer an alternative to the many social distractions that exist.

“Since the introduction of the National Lottery, sportscotland has been able to invest over £106 million in all aspects of Scottish sport including youth sport, sports facilities, coaching, major events and top athletes.”
