Lottery win for local school - Lockerbie

Thursday 7 September 2000

A local school is set to benefit from an injection of National Lottery funds to help develop more opportunities for sport.

Lockerbie Academy in Dumfries and Galloway has received an award of £9,142 (over two years, 11 months) from sportscotland Lottery Fund to help fund the appointment of a School Sport Co-ordinator.

"...sport can also promote confidence, form friendships and offer an alternative to the many social distractions that exist"

The job of a co-ordinator is to increase sporting opportunities for school children by developing extra-curricular school sport and integrating it with sport in the wider community.

The work the co-ordinator will undertake will include: developing the extra-curricular school sport programme; organising teacher and coach education programmes; working closely with community clubs and associated primary schools; and monitoring participation levels.

Ian Robson, Chief Executive of sportscotland, said:  “All children should be encouraged to take part in sport and recreation.  As well as the obvious benefits to their health, sport can also promote confidence, form friendships and offer an alternative to the many social distractions that exist.

sportscotland has now invested over £106 million of National Lottery Funds in all aspects of Scottish sport including sports facilities, coaching, major events, top athletes and youth sport.”
