All to play for new sports field for Connel
Monday 20 August 2001
The tranquil village of Connel, boasting spectacular views of Loch Etive, the mountain scenery beyond from Beinn Lora to Ben Cruachan and the only salt waterfall in Scotland known as the Falls of Lora, is the picturesque setting today for the Connel Millennium Sports Field Association’s official opening of its new grass pitch and car park.
"This new grass pitch will be an asset to the local community..."
The pitch was built with the support of £23,300 from the sportscotland Lottery Fund. Martin Bowie, sportscotland Project Manager, will cut a ribbon to officially open the pitch. Other major funders were: Argyll Islands Enterprise Company (£18,700) and the North British Hotel Trust (£10,000) both contributing towards the total cost of £57,000.
Battle will then commence between two U12 football teams from Connel and Taynuilt in a friendly match to christen the new pitch. The Committee Chairman, Sandy Dunlop, will present the winning team with a challenge trophy.
The Brownies, Rainbows and other youth groups have also worked hard to support the event by arranging activities for the local community such as a penalty shoot out competition, other games, stalls and refreshments.
Harry Powell, Committee Secretary, said: “The community is hoping for a sunny day and looking forward to a good turn out of sponsors, local folk and others who have contributed in various ways to the success of this project.”
Ian Robson, Chief Executive of sportscotland, said: “This new grass pitch will be an asset to the local community, providing a quality facility for sport.
“sportscotland aims to promote a healthier Scotland and to encourage participation in sport by people of every age and ability. Supporting projects such as the Connel Millennium Sports Field allows communities to enjoy sport and become more active more often.”
