Commonwealth Games eligibility appeals decided
Friday 7 December 2001
The Commonwealth Games Federation has now considered appeals relating to eligibility cases of a number of potential Games athletes including four from Scotland. Scottish eligibility appeals on behalf of Ruth Irving (Athletics) and Jamie Barlow (Gymnastics) were upheld leaving them clear for selection (subject to meeting selection criteria) for the Bank of Scotland Scottish Team, which will be competing in next year's Commonwealth Games in Manchester. However, appeals on behalf of John White (Squash) and Monique McCarroll (Diving) were declined.
Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland's Chief Executive, Jon Doig commented: "Whilst we are delighted for Ruth and Jamie, we are extremely disappointed that our applications on behalf of John and Monique were rejected. Both are currently competing as part of Scottish teams under their own sport's rules and would have been strong contenders for the 2002 Games."
