Cowal cash community celebrates

Thursday 28 June 2001

The community of Cowal are today celebrating the start of a £150,000 project to build an all-weather multipurpose synthetic grass playing field.

With the help of an award of £99,238 from the sportscotland Lottery Fund, the multipurpose playing field will increase the existing sports field provision at Dunoon Stadium.

The 72m x 36m field will be used for a variety of sports including shinty, football, hockey and basketball. During the day, the facility will be used by the Council’s education service. Community groups will have also have access to the facilities.

Councillor Dick Walsh, Chair of the Council’s Area Committee, said: “The Council has agreed a major development programme for the provision and development of playing fields and their facilities. Now we will see the creation of an important, year-round, modern sports facility for Cowal. We anticipate that one in every fifteen people will use it. Once again working in partnership has proved to be the key to success at both national and community level.”

Ian Robson, Chief Executive of sportscotland, said: “This award will help to provide resources which can bring lasting benefits to the local community of Cowal.

“If we want to improve the health of our nation, we have to take a serious look at our physical activity levels and that means giving more people the opportunity to get active. In order to achieve this, projects such as this one must continue throughout Scotland.”

“This new synthetic pitch will be used by a significant range of sports from shinty matches to basketball practice and will provide a top class facility for the local sporting community.”
