Local football hero pitches up to open sports facility

Saturday 24 November 2001

Coupar Angus Recreation Association (CARA) today welcomes local hero Alan Main from St Johnstone Football Club, as guest of honour at the official opening of the all weather multi-court facility in Larghan Park, Coupar Angus.

Constructed with the support of £47,393 from the sportscotland Lottery Fund, the multi purpose synthetic grass area, will have a variety of uses especially tennis, five a side football, hockey, basketball and cricket.

The new floodlit all weather area is the only purpose built sports facility in the community and will provide the resources to meet the recreational and competitive sporting needs of Coupar Angus. CARA hope that the wide range of sports available will act as a catalyst to increase participation in sport by local residents and schools.

As well as special guest Alan Main, the local children will be demonstrating their hockey and football skills on the new courts and a local pipe band will entertain guests and visitors.

Wendy McCombes, Chairperson of Coupar Angus Recreation Association, said: “CARA wishes to thank all the contributors, including sportscotland Lottery Fund and The Gannochy Trust as well as all the local businesses and individuals, who have worked so hard to make this project possible.

“This multi sport surface will provide a facility benefiting the whole community, especially the local children. We hope that the people of Coupar Angus will utilise this resource as a way of playing sport and bringing the residents together.”

Alastair Dempster, Chairman of sportscotland, said: “The new multi courts will, I am sure, be a great asset to Coupar Angus and the surrounding area.

sportscotland is keen to encourage the Scottish nation to lead a healthier life style through increased participation in sport. With the range of sports it offers, suiting every age and ability, this facility is a good example of widening opportunities for the community to get more active, more often in action. ”
