Wheelchair basketball proves popular in Perth - Royal Mail Ready Willing and Able for Sport Press Release

Monday 4 June 2001

Wheelchair basketball has proved to be so popular that Scottish Disability Sport are extending an invitation to young people with a physical disability from throughout Scotland to attend the third in a series of come and try sessions in the sport.

"The sessions are designed to give participants the opportunity to learn the basic skills required..."

The event will take place at Bell's Sport Centre, Perth, on Sunday 17th June from 10.00am-1.00pm.  Anyone with a physical disability under the age of 23 is eligible to take part. There is no need to be reliant on a wheelchair for everyday mobility as limited chairs will be available on the day. A nominal charge of £3.00 for the session is payable on the day.

Fraser Govan, Scottish Disability Sport's Junior Wheelchair Basketball Coach, commented: "The sessions are proving to be a real success, with all the young people picking up the skills as they go along. The sessions are designed to give participants the opportunity to learn the basic skills required, and I would urge as many young people as possible to come along and join us on the 17th of June. I don't think it will be long until some of the players are ready to play full matches, as I have definitely seen some promising youngsters."

Richard Brickley, Chairman of Scottish Disability Sport, said: "Scottish Disability Sport is delighted to be leading this project, giving young people with a physical disability the opportunity to access experienced coaching in this exciting sport. If the project proves to be sustainable we will look at setting up a club structure locally where appropriate. Thereafter, having a hub based in Perth, where selected players will come together for experienced coaching, and continue local sessions on a regular basis."

The session is sponsored by Royal Mail as part of the Royal Mail Ready Willing and Able for Sport programme. During 2000/01 Royal Mail has invested more than £30,000 in the development of sport for people with a disability throughout Scotland.
