£3.2M Lottery funds invested in Scottish sports facilities

2 September 2002

The sportscotland Lottery Fund have today announced an investment of over £3.2M in sports facilities across Scotland. The £10M Swimming Pool Upgrade programme is now well underway with another two awards totalling over £0.75M going to two pools; Larkhall Leisure Centre, South Lanarkshire and Duns Swimming Pool in Berwickshire. The Swimming Pool Upgrade strand is part of the sportscotland Lottery Fund Sports Facilities Programme, other strands include School/Communities, Regional Facilities and Local Facilities.

"...there will now be many new and improved facilities for Scottish sporting enthusiasts, professional or otherwise..."

The Swimming Pool Upgrade programme was launched in November last year to kick-start the process of re-investment into Scotland's deteriorating stock of swimming pools, following on from findings published in the 'Ticking Time Bomb' study, which identified that Scotland's swimming pools will require £540m re-investment in them by the year 2020 if they are to continue to serve the needs of the population. This is equivalent to £25M per year at 1998 prices. Awards have already been announced for projects in Easterhouse, Glasgow, North Ayrshire, and East Renfrewshire bringing the total investment to £1.9M since the programme began 9 months ago.

Local authorities and other pool providers were invited to put forward applications to sportscotland. Priority was given to applications for the refurbishment of swimming pools which will play key roles in providing swimming opportunities as part of wider swimming pool management plans.

Larkhall Swimming Pool has been awarded nearly £600,000 to upgrade its facilities. South Lanarkshire Council's Leader Eddie McAvoy said: "We are delighted that sportscotland have awarded a Lottery Fund award of £596,379, enhancing the investment previously identified by the Council for Larkhall Leisure Centre.

"This will be added to the £1.2M that the Council has committed over the next two years to continue its investment in sport and recreation properties. The Council is committed to working with South Lanarkshire Leisure Limited to ensure that our citizens receive access to first class facilities and activities".

Alastair Dempster, Chairman of sportscotland, said: "As always sportscotland is delighted to see another major Lottery Fund programme get well and truly off the ground. It is encouraging to see local authorities and other organisations applying for this earmarked Lottery funding to improve swimming facilities around Scotland and working with us to widen sporting opportunities for areas that need it.
"Along with all the others facilities projects announced today and following on from many successes for Scottish athletes in the Commonwealth Games this summer, there will now be many new and improved facilities for Scottish sporting enthusiasts, professional or otherwise, to enjoy their sport."
