£5.2M Lottery funds invested in Scottish sports facilities
Thursday 12 December 2002
The sportscotland Lottery Fund have today announced investment of over £5.2M in sports facilities across Scotland, with £1.5M committed to the redevelopment of the Nicolson Lewis Sport Centre on the Western Isles. In line with Scotland's national strategy for sport, Sport 21, the awards continue sportscotland's commitment to backing projects in priority areas, ensuring that communities who need sporting facilities the most are given the highest level of support.
"sportscotland has a commitment and a vision to make Scotland a great sporting nation "
The £1.5M award for the Nicolson Lewis Sport Centre will help fund a new sports centre with six badminton courts, games hall, six lane swimming pool with moveable floor, fitness suite, multi sports ancillary hall, crèche, soft play area and squash court.
Today's announcement coincides with key members of sportscotland, including Chief Executive Ian Robson, arriving in Stornoway to encourage local participation in the review of Sport 21 before the final strategy is published in March 2003. This document heavily influences how sport is delivered in Scotland by all the key players, both nationally and locally. The aim of the updated strategy is to build on that influence by enhancing the partnership approach to the future delivery of sport for Scotland.
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar's Chairman of Arts and Leisure, Cllr. Alasdair Macrae, said: "This is a massive boost for our plans for a new sports centre and I am delighted that we are now well on track to putting in place the necessary funding for what will be one of the premier sports facilities in the north of Scotland. The development of sport in the Islands is accelerating and the new facility will provide a base for a range of sporting activities. This is another huge investment by sportscotland in the sporting future of the Western Isles."
Ian Robson, Chief Executive of sportscotland, said: "sportscotland has a commitment and a vision to make Scotland a great sporting nation - not just in terms of medals but by increasing participation across all ages and social backgrounds. Today's announcement of over £5.2M will go some way to helping us achieve that.
"However, if are to keep improving in this respect we must continue focusing on providing good quality, accessible sporting facilities for everyone - a commitment which is a cornerstone of Sport 21. We know Scots are passionate about sport and we want to ensure their views are reflected within the national strategy for sport. Now is their chance to contribute."
