Community Celebrate Lottery Cash
Monday 11 November 2002
After five years of hard work, the Muirhead and Birkhill Millennium Hall Committee are celebrating the opening of a new multi purpose community hall in Birkhill Recreation Park. The park is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and the new facility is a fitting tribute enabling better utilisation of outdoor team sports and encouraging the local community to participate in indoor sport and fitness.
"This project is of great benefit to a village community..."
Supported by an award of £99,384 from the sportscotland Lottery Fund, the new facility will enable the community to participate in badminton, dance, art classes, a pre school group, internet café and youth club. The local school will also use the facilities to develop their physical education curriculum.
Launched in May 1998, at the request of the community, the Millennium Hall Committee have explored numerous avenues to find the funding for this project. The Provost for Angus, Francis Duncan will officially open the hall by cutting a ribbon. This will be followed by refreshments.
Tom Brown, Chairman of the Muirhead and Birkhill Millennium Hall Committee, said: "This project is of great benefit to a village community which is still growing and we will now have a modern facility to meet the needs of all ages."
Alastair Dempster, Chairman of sportscotland, said: "I am delighted that the Muirhead and Birkhill Millennium Hall is completed. I am sure that the hall will prove to be a popular addition to the area enabling the community to have access to a quality facility.
"sportscotland continues in its aim to create an ethos where more people in Scotland are encouraged to be physically active and has funded sports facilities all over the country. The Millennium Hall will be able to offer a comprehensive choice of recreational opportunities promoting a healthier lifestyle and community sport."
- The opening will take place at the Birkhill Recreation Park, Coupar Angus Road, Birkhill on Saturday 16 November at 2pm.
