Community Complex Receives Royal Approval

29 November 2002

HRH Prince Andrew will be in Alloa, Clackmannanshire today to officially open Phase One of the £1.44M project to build a new community sports complex at Lornshill Academy.

"This is an ideal opportunity to improve the health and well being of the inhabitants of Alloa"

Supported by an award of £500,000 from the sportscotland Lottery Fund, the first phase of the Tulligarth Community Leisure Complex will incorporate a full size synthetic football pitch, all weather sprint track, resurfaced tennis courts and upgraded changing facilities to service the swimming pool and sports halls.

The combination of modernising existing school facilities and the creation of new facilities will allow the Council to open up the Complex to the wider community, providing access to sports facilities that are currently unavailable in the local and surrounding area. This is an important project for sport in the area, and demonstrates Clackmannanshire Council's and sportscotland's commitment to improving the links between sport at school and sport in the community.

Provost Walter McAdam said: "We are delighted with the new sports facility which is already being well used by both pupils and the local community. The Tulligarth Community Leisure Complex represents a huge investment for the area and now provides a state of the art facility for pupils, promising athletes and the community.

"Tulligarth - Phase 2 will improve community access for learning and leisure opportunities and will include a multi purpose area for drama, dance and keep fit combined with a community space, additional grass pitch and a fitness suite."

Alastair Dempster, Chairman of sportscotland, said: "sportscotland are delighted that phase one of this project at Lornshill Academy is completed.

"This is an ideal opportunity to improve the health and well being of the inhabitants of Alloa. It not only encourages children to enjoy physical activity during school hours and at after school clubs but also provides an excellent facility for the whole community."
