Facilities fit for a king

Thursday 28 February 2002

Dumfries and Galloway Council are proud to announce the completion of their new fitness suite within the King George V Sports Complex. The facility will house state of the art equipment, satellite TV, air-conditioning and 22 fitness stations.

"Widening the opportunities to participate in sport is one of sportscotland's driving ambitions."

The former meeting room was converted with the support of £30,000 from the sportscotland Lottery Sports Facilities Fund. An official opening ceremony will take place on Friday 1 March 2002 and will be performed by Dr Elaine Murray MSP, Deputy Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport.

The completion of this project will provide Dumfries and Galloway with a quality, affordable fitness facility the whole community can access. Links have been made with local schools and sports groups to ensure better sporting opportunities for all.

Scott Grant, Leisure and Sport Development Officer for Dumfries and Galloway Council, said: "The fitness suite will always be staffed by qualified instructors who will be responsible for creating a friendly, welcoming atmosphere providing fitness programmes based on individual needs. With the completion of the fitness suite, the King George V Fitness Centre will give people access to an all round fitness package.

"This is a very exciting development and the funds received from sportscotland helped to make the only full time Council Gym in the East of Dumfries and Galloway possible."

Alastair Dempster, Chairman of sportscotland, said: "sportscotland is determined to provide quality sporting facilities to benefit people of all ages and backgrounds. Widening the opportunities to participate in sport is one of sportscotland's driving ambitions.

"The new fitness suite at Dumfries and Galloway will provide a local and affordable fitness facility for the surrounding residents. I am delighted the sportscotland Lottery Fund was instrumental in improving sporting opportunities for the community."
