Funding ring fenced for young talent

Monday 4 March 2002

Scottish Fencing are celebrating their fourth consecutive year of funding from the sportscotland Lottery Fund's Junior Groups Programme, which provides talented young athletes with a comprehensive training and competition programme.

"It is vital to our development as a sporting nation to support talented young people from various sports and ensure that they develop to their maximum potential."

Over the last three years Scottish Fencing has introduced a very successful training programme, which has provided young athletes with world-class coaches and created a tremendous team spirit. It has helped instil the fencers with a strong sense of belonging and a more professional attitude towards their sport.

Scottish Fencing received £36,437 from the sportscotland Lottery Fund to cater for fencers in the U12, U14, U16 and U18 age groups drawn from all parts of Scotland. The programme consists of two parts, the Junior Excellence and Junior Elite, and includes weekend training camps, summer camps, national and British Championship competitions and international events.

Lorraine Rose, Executive Administrator, Scottish Fencing, said: "Scottish Fencing would like to acknowledge the role that sportscotland and their continued funding has played in our achievements. Six Scots have been selected to take part in the cadet and Junior World Championships to be held in Turkey, April 2002. Scottish Fencing would like to thank sportscotland for helping us to achieve success at British level and we hope that we can follow this with news of success at international level."

Alastair Dempster, Chairman of sportscotland, said: "The Junior Groups Programme will ensure that young enthusiastic fencing talent throughout Scotland will benefit from quality coaching and training, giving them the opportunity to fence at a British and international level.

"It is vital to our development as a sporting nation to support talented young people from various sports and ensure that they develop to their maximum potential."
