Junior boxers hook lottery funding
8 July 2002
Amateur Boxing Scotland (ABS) have welcomed their second consecutive year of funding from the sportscotland Lottery Fund's Junior Groups Programme, which provides talented young athletes with a comprehensive training and competition programme.
ABS have received £39,500 from sportscotland, which will be used to provide Scotland's best young boxers with enhanced training, coaching and international competitive opportunities. The programme will give many of the boxers their first opportunity to train together as a squad as well as providing them with access to comprehensive sports science and medicine programmes.
ABS has identified 53 boxers to participate in the programme, all of which have been performing at junior national level. The age group ranges from U12 to U19, and the programme will be co-ordinated by the National Coach when appointed.
Donald Campbell, Administrator for ABS, said: "ABS are again delighted to have received funding from the Junior Groups Programme and look forward to appointing a Full Time National Coach to co-ordinate the programme"
Alastair Dempster, Chairman of sportscotland, said: "sportscotland is delighted to work together with Amateur Boxing Scotland in developing these talented young athletes. The practical benefits include enabling them to receive quality coaching and training and compete at their highest level.
"We acknowledge that continued support and management of our young sports stars at an early age is vital for the future of Scottish sport. We are building a foundation to extend the number of athletes who can represent our country on the world stage."
