BP National Player Development Camp for Shinty
Tuesday 8 July 2003
Kilgraston School in Perthshire will host the BP National Player Development Camp starting on Sunday 13 July supported by the Camanachd Association and sportscotland. The weeklong programme will involve 65 of shinty’s finest U16 players and aims to enhance and develop their skills in the game.
Garry Reid, Camp Organiser said: “The interest in participating at the camp has seen a dramatic rise in recent years as clubs now see it as an important part of the development and learning in young players.”
This year 22 clubs spanning from Aberdour in Fife to Lochcarron in Wester Ross will attend the camp making it the most represented event since it began ten years ago. The camp is part of the BP Tourfest Programme, which has received £50,000 in sponsorship from BP this year. It is organised by sportscotland in partnership with local authorities and 12 national governing bodies of sport including disability sport. By reaching communities throughout Scotland it aims to tackle the issue of social inclusion, while promoting the benefits sport can bring in terms of health and education.
Harry MacMillan, Vice President Government & Public Affairs, BP Scotland, said: “BP has been a longstanding supporter of the promotion and development of sporting opportunities for young people throughout Scotland. BP TOURFEST is our flagship programme and we are delighted to be working in partnership with sportscotland, the Scottish governing bodies of sport and local authorities.”
The camp aims to introduce players to a new level of coaching techniques, fitness training and mental preparation. Top players and coaches including Kingussie’s prolific goal scorer and Highland Development Officer, Ronald Ross, Scottish Internationalists Gary Innes (Fort William), Scott Rodger (Kilmallie) and David Glass (Inverness) will be attending to share their skills and experience.
John MacKenzie, Camanachd Association President, said: “The BP programme is a clear demonstration that children throughout the country are taking up and enjoying being part of one of Scotland’s oldest and most traditional sports and by working together with sportscotland we hope that this trend will continue.”
