New Generation fitness suite opens at Ryan Centre

Monday 15 March 2004

Local Councillor Fred Murray will perform the official opening of a new Profiles Plus Fitness Suite at the Ryan Centre in Stranraer. Supported by an award of £75,000 from sportscotland’s Lottery funded Sports Facilities Programme, the fitness suite will add a new dimension to existing leisure provisions in the local area, ultimately making it easier for people to participate in sport on a more regular basis.

The Profiles Plus Fitness Suite will provide users with unlimited access to the 28 station equipment area featuring a selection of cardiovascular and resistance exercise machines as well as an audio music system using plasma television screens. The suite will be supervised at all times by fully trained and qualified fitness staff who will provide expert advice to users.

As part of the Council’s commitment to support the West of Scotland Institute of Sport, young people over 16 years will be encouraged to join and use the new fitness suite and its facilities. This sports initiative aims to build and develop a long-term interest in physical activity amongst youngsters as well as to facilitate performance training for institute athletes in the local area. Sports clubs will also be invited to utilise and benefit from the suite’s extensive range of new generation fitness equipment to help maximise training and competition programmes.

Kirsty Pinkerton, Facility Manager, Ryan Centre said: “This exciting new facility demonstrates Leisure and Sport’s ongoing commitment to providing a high quality, affordable service to all residents of Dumfries and Galloway. We are grateful to sportscotland for their financial contribution and ongoing support to the development of this facility, which will help to widen sporting opportunities in the local community.”

Alastair Dempster, Chairman of sportscotland said: “We are delighted to support the upgrade of the fitness suite at Ryan Centre with a sportscotland lottery award of £75,000. It is hoped that the facility will provide a catalyst to encourage more people from the wider community to get involved in sport and physical activity.

“ This project has demonstrated that by working in close partnerships with local authorities and other key organisations we can channel our resources towards delivering the best possible sporting opportunities and outcomes for local communities in Scotland.”
