Newcastleton polysport pavilion project complete
Friday 16 April 2004
Olympic, World European, Commonwealth gold medallist, Steve Cram MBE will unveil a new sports pavilion at Newcastleton, marking the completion of the second and final phase of the Newcastleton Polysport Project. The well-known sports personality has been a strong supporter of the project for many years and is delighted that the local community will significantly benefit from the upgrade of leisure and sports provisions.
Supported by an award of £152,163 from the sportscotland Lottery Fund’s Sports Facilities Programme, the new pavilion consists of changing facilities, referees’ quarters, a multi-purpose, first aid and equipment rooms. Local schools, football clubs and members of the community will have the opportunity to experience a wide range of activities and extend their use of both new and existing sporting facilities in the area.
Winners of the Borders’ New Ways Award for the first phase of the project (all- weather sports pitch), Newcastleton Polysport has been instrumental in securing funding from key partners to support the development of this modern facility. Operating in partnership with the all-weather sports pitch, the new pavilion will aim to widen and deliver the best possible sporting opportunities for the local community and encourage them to build a long term interest in sport and recreation.
Libby Kennedy, Chairperson of Newcastleton Polysport said:”We are most grateful to sportscotland, the village and other funders for their support in this project. We are thrilled to see the successful completion of the new pavilion.”

Alastair Dempster, Chairman of sportscotland said: “We are delighted to support this project with an award of £152,163 from sportscotland Lottery Fund. Good facilities and resources must be available and accessible to bring people into sports participation and encourage those who already participate to do so more often.
“This project is an excellent example of how through close partnership working we can achieve a positive outcome that will bring a significant benefit to the local community. Without the substantial efforts of the Polysport Project Group and the financial and in-kind contributions from other partners, this project would not have gone ahead.”
