Basketball receive funding from sportscotland

Thursday 3 March 2005

sportscotland is delighted announce funding totalling £193,850 to basketballscotland to support key areas of the sport’s business plan from grassroots development to medal success. The investment includes:£98,900 for club development, staffing and the Volunteer Development programme, £64,950 for athlete support and performance coach development and £30,000 to support the post of National Youth Development Manager.

A key priority for basketballscotland is to maximise ways to increase participation. Club development is crucial to this aim and basketballscotland is working closely with clubs to provide support for coaching, training, competition and administration to ensure they develop stronger programmes and widen the opportunities for people of all ages and abilities.

Fundamental to the club structure are the volunteers and members. basketballscotland are introducing a volunteer development project which recognises and rewards the work of volunteers. The project will include a volunteer membership system to provide training and widen the opportunities to get involved.

In addition, more young people will be encouraged to play the sport through the Active Schools network. Co-ordinated by Craig Glasson, the National Youth Development Manager, clubs will be encouraged to develop links with schools and basketballscotland to utilise the resources and expertise available to increase the number of children enjoying the game.

At elite level, the senior men’s team have qualified for the 2006 Commonwealth Games and the athlete support funding will enable the squad to train and prepare for this major competition. The senior women are also receiving funding for training and competition programmes.

Fiona Justin, Chief Executive, basketballscotland, said: "Considerable funding from sportscotland coupled with strong commercial partnerships will enable basketballscotland to launch two new projects this year in the areas of volunteer and club development.

"Fundamental to the success of any sport is volunteer participation. This will be encouraged through the development of training opportunities and the launch of an annual volunteer recognition awards scheme. In order to support sustainable opportunities for our volunteers we also need stronger more plentiful clubs that are in line with best practice. The funding from sportscotland will facilitate development and pilot of a best practice ‘club mark’ so that parents, coaches, officials, players and spectators can be assured of the best possible participation experience."

Alastair Dempster, Chairman, sportscotland, said: "sportscotland is delighted to award £193,850 to basketballscotland through our new integrated investment process. This new investment method is driven by our commitment to an enhanced partnership approach. By looking at the whole business plan for a sport in one go, we hope to make a positive impact while ensuring value for money.

"Through investing in the whole of the sport’s infrastructure, we aim not only to encourage people to become more active, more often at a recreational level, but also to nurture and develop those who demonstrate the potential to achieve on the world stage."

  • A list of the athletes benefiting from the athlete support is detailed below. Athlete Support funding is now largely administered through the governing body.
  • Integrated investment aims to streamline our support by combining Lottery and Exchequer funding streams enabling governing bodies to submit one development or business plan to be considered across all three sportscotland visions (Achieving Excellence, Developing Potential and Widening Opportunities).
  • Athlete Support is a new funding programme which merges and replaces the former Junior Groups and Talented Athlete programmes and provides a seamless, integrated pathway for the development of emerging talent.
  • This new programme supports the training and preparation programmes for elite athletes who have demonstrated the potential to win medals or equivalent, in significant international competitions and events such as the Olympics, Paralympics and Commonwealth Games.
  • All athletes who receive Athlete Support will also be supported by the new sportscotland medical scheme.
