Coaching talent comes together

Around 100 coaches from the East of Scotland will come together this weekend for the first of three regional coaching conferences this year. The East of Scotland Coaching Conference, entitled ‘Coaching Counts 2005’, is being held at Midlothian School of Gymnastics on Sunday 27 February and will offer a quality coach development programme to local and regional coaches.

The Coaching Counts 2005 Conference is a unique partnership between sportscotland, Coaching Edinburgh, Midlothian Council, West Lothian Council, Scottish Borders Council, East of Scotland Institute of Sport, JudoScotland, and Scottish Gymnastics, with all partners collaborating to provide an exciting and innovative programme of opportunities for coaches.

The programme for the conference, which is very practical in nature, focuses on gymnastics and judo with coaches taking part in workshops in artistic gymnastic through to the techniques of throwing skills in judo. Delegates will also be shown the application of the principles of Long Term Player Development and the role the coach plays at each level. A practical generic workshop will also benefit coaches from a variety of other sports.

The coaches can also listen and learn form an array of experienced coaches and speakers during the day. The keynote speakers include: Patrick Roux, Assistant Director for the French Judo Federation; Christine Still, Scotland’s Director of Coaching for Women’s Artistic Gymnastics; Vadim Kolganov, a freelance Sports Injury therapist and a Level One Coach in Olympic Freestyle Wrestling; and Sandy Richardson, a lecturer in sports coaching and coach to Scotland’s Commonwealth Games Team for 2006.

  • The conference is being held on Sunday 27 February, 10.00am until 4.00pm at Midlothian School of Gymnastics, Lasswade High School Centre, Eskdale Drive, Bonnyrigg, Midlothian.
  • The keynote speakers and subjects they are covering are:

        o Patrick Roux, Assistant Director for the French Judo Federation will be taking the coaches through the throwing and groundwork skills in judo from basic techniques to the fundamental judo principles.

        o Vadim Kolganov, a freelance Sports Injury therapist based in Glasgow, a 3rd Dan in Ju-jitsu as well as a Level One Coach for Olympic Freestyle Wrestling will be co-presenting a workshop with Sandy Richardson, exploring the contribution that basic gymnastic skills and martial arts (grappling) skills could bring to a training programme.

        o Christine Still is the current Director of Coaching for Women’s Artistic Gymnastics in Scotland and will be taking practical workshops on artistic gymnastics which will cover the asymmetric bars and somersaults on/from apparatus.

        o Sandy Richardson a lecturer in sports coaching at Edinburgh’s Telford College, and Coach to Scotland’s Commonwealth Games Team for 2006 will be giving a keynote presentation on the application of the principles of Long Term Player Development.

  • The two other regional coaching conferences being held this year are in Fife on 15 May and in Tayside in October.
