Wednesday 23 November 2005
Julia Bracewell OBE, Chair of sportscotland, announced today that Stewart Harris has been appointed as the new chief executive for the organisation.

Stewart, who was the Director of Widening Opportunities at sportscotland, has been Acting Chief Executive since the departure of Ian Taylor in April 2005.
Stewart brings a wealth of experience to the role, including 12 years as a PE teacher, a lifelong involvement with basketball in Scotland as a board member, club and international coach, as well as extensive experience of working with local authorities. In his post as Director of Widening Opportunities, Stewart was responsible for developing the School Sport Co-ordinator Programme and Active Schools Network, which is playing a key part in increasing physical activity levels of children in schools across Scotland.
Announcing the appointment, Julia Bracewell said: "I am delighted that Stewart has been appointed as the new CEO. He has successfully led the organisation through a considerable period of change and uncertainty. I now look forward to working with him as we start to address the many challenges and opportunities we face in the coming months and years, none greater than maximising the benefits for Scottish sport of London 2012 and Scotland's bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
"We have a range of complementary skills which I am sure will make us an effective team at the helm of Scottish sport."
Commenting on his appointment, Stewart Harris said: "Having worked extensively with many of the key partners involved in Scottish sport such as local authorities and governing bodies, I am delighted to be given the opportunity to bring that experience to the post of CEO at sportscotland. I am in no doubt that this is a very positive time for Scottish sport and I am looking forward to driving the organisation forward to make the most of the host of opportunities that we are presented with, in particular, playing a key role in achieving the targets of Sport 21."
Stewart Harris will take up the permanent post with immediate effect.
