Social Inclusion Partnership projects benefit from sportscotland funding
Monday 28 February 2005
The sportscotland Lottery Fund is delighted to announce funding of over £263,000 to six new projects across Scotland demonstrating sportscotland’s commitment to improving access to healthy lifestyle choices, enhancing sporting opportunities and helping communities in social inclusion areas develop themselves through sport and physical recreation.
"No community should be denied access to sport as it makes such a valuable contribution to our lives both physically and socially. We are committed to working in strategic partnerships to ensure that all communities have access to healthy lifestyle choices by widening the sporting opportunities available to them."
Today’s awards brings the amount awarded by sportscotland through this programme to £2.6m since June 2002, 60 projects across Scotland are now benefiting from Lottery support which is making a real difference in some of the most deprived areas across Scotland.
Two of today’s awards are benefiting communities in Greater Pollok, Glasgow. An award of £98,337 has been made Glasgow City Council to provide transport for all 18 local primary schools to enable them to travel to the newly opened Nethercraigs Sports Complex to participate in a comprehensive programme of coached activities.
The award will also support a community chest to support local groups and organisations delivering sport and physical activity within the SIP area. The groups will be able to access grants for coach education, equipment and transport thus widening the opportunities for various sporting activities to be made available for the community.
A further award of £52,950 has also been made to the area to provide local coach education courses and development opportunities for sport clubs and individuals working with groups to enhance the delivery and increase opportunities for volunteers. Funding will also be provided to allow individuals to access city wide, regional and national courses.
It is hoped that by widening the range and number of activities available it will help to retain the current participants and encourage more people to take part in sport and physical activity.
Councillor Alex Glass, vice-chair of Greater Pollok Social Inclusion Partnership, said: "We are delighted with the finding given to the area by sportscotland. The community will gain tremendous benefit from the new Nethercraigs Sports Complex, and providing greater transport access and support for coaching and volunteers will maximise the benefit to the community."
Alastair Dempster, Chairman of sportscotland, said: "No community should be denied access to sport as it makes such a valuable contribution to our lives both physically and socially. We are committed to working in strategic partnerships to ensure that all communities have access to healthy lifestyle choices by widening the sporting opportunities available to them."
