Fun and games at Fintry with sportscotland funding
Friday 13 October 2006
The community of Fintry in Dundee will be celebrating with the official opening of the new multi use games area at Cheviot Crescent this Saturday 14 October.
Supported by an award of £53,736 from sportscotland’s Lottery funded Sports Facilities Programme, the new sports area will become a focal point for sport and leisure activities for the young people in the area and will cater for a number of sports including 5-a-side football, basketball, netball, tennis and mini-hockey.
The whole project has been led by the Finmill Community Safety Panel, an organisation established for 12 years, which aims to promote public safety and crime prevention in the housing areas of Fintry and Mill O’Mains. The safety panel see the new facility as providing a focus for young people encouraging them to develop their skills thereby building their self-confidence and self-esteem, and improving the physical and social structures in the local area.
John Gilruth, Chairman of Finmill Community Safety Panel said: “It is great to see the new games area being officially opened. This has been a community led project which has involved the Finmill Community Safety Panel, Fintry North Residents Association and the Fintry North Youth Project and through many consultations with the young people of the youth project, rules and timetables of use have been agreed.
“Dundee City Council Sports Development Team will organise weekly coaching sessions, at the new area, and weekday slots will also be available for use by local schools and times be reserved at weekends for club bookings.”
Julia Bracewell OBE, Chair of sportscotland said: “sportscotland is delighted to have supported this fantastic project with a Lottery award of £53,736 from sportscotland’s former Sports Facilities programme, helping widen the sporting opportunities for the young people of Fintry and introducing them to the benefits and enjoyment sport can provide.
“Good facilities and resources must be available and accessible to bring people into sports participation and encourage those who already participate to do so more often and this project is another example of sportscotland’s commitment to providing communities across Scotland with quality, accessible facilities.”
