New protection for Open Spaces

Friday 11 August 2006

For immediate use

sportscotland welcomes the draft policy SPP11 Physical Activity and Open Space issued by the Scottish Executive (10 August),which places a presumption against development on existing valued open space.

Commenting on the proposals, Julia Bracewll OBE, Chair of sportscotland said: “We recognise the importance of attractive and accessible open spaces in encouraging people from all ages and backgrounds to adopt more active lifestyles as well as the need for quality accessible outdoor sports facilities."

"Experience has shown that our involvement in the planning system as a statutory consultee and the consistent application of our policy for the protection of playing fields has reduced the overall number of pitches being lost and secured significant amounts of new investment for both replacement and upgraded facilities.

" As well as reaffirming our position as a statutory consultee with regard to pitches, the proposals include a new requirement to consult sportscotland on any development which will lead to the loss of smaller sports facilities such as bowling greens and tennis courts.

“We firmly believe this policy will help to safeguard access to open space and ensure a better deal for sport and physical activity."
