Rugby League gets advantage with sportscotland funding
Monday 10 July 2006
The sport of Rugby League in Scotland is set to benefit from a sportscotland award of £30,000, today announced Julia Bracewell OBE, Chair, sportscotland.
The investment into the fast-moving sport, which includes £10,000 in Lottery money, will help expansion at the junior club level and aid the Scotland Rugby League (SRL) in its organisational development.
Established in 1995, the SRL is the recognised governing body for Rugby League football in Scotland and gained official recognition from sportscotland in 2000. Progress in club development is encouraging in the sport, with the number of registered players having doubled in the past two years, from 519 to 1,087; the majority of the interest in the sport has taken place in local communities, including community regeneration areas.
This year’s funding will focus specifically on the running of the governing body, helping them to establish a junior girls team in each junior club and to assist two more clubs to become accredited in the 13-a-side sport.
Julia Bracewell OBE, Chair, sportscotland, said: “I am delighted to announce a sportscotland award of £30,000 to the Scotland Rugby League. This funding will help the governing body to continue its positive organisational and club development.
“It is fabulous to see that the sport has taken off in many communities across Scotland and that girls are being included in the sport’s expansion at club level.”
