sportscotland deliver investment to Scottish volleyball

Tuesday 27 June 2006

The sport of volleyball is set to benefit from £155,000 of sportscotland investment, today announced Julia Bracewell OBE, Chair of sportscotland.

The funding to the Scottish Volleyball Association (SVA), of which £45,000 is Lottery money, will go towards coaching and volunteering, player improvement and organisational development.

The SVA is the recognised governing body for volleyball in all its forms, including beach volleyball and sitting volleyball, and is responsible for the development and promotion of volleyball in Scotland. The governing body is now entering the second year of its development plan, ‘Compete for Success’, which has five key priority areas: people, clubs, facilities, branding and organisational structure.

The SVA fulfilled a number of key delivery objectives last year. A Long Term Player Development (LTPD) model was implemented and is now in place within its club and performance structure. Coaching courses have been revised and a new staff tutor programme has been implemented with 25 tutors currently being trained.

In the forthcoming year, the SVA are aiming to increase membership and volunteer numbers, including conducting an audit of their volunteer programme, increase the number and quality of active accredited officials and coaches and work towards improved performance of junior and senior squads. They will also complete work on their child protection policy.

In addition, a new coaching networking post has been developed to lead on and integrate a local coaching strategy, develop the United Kingdom Coaching Certificate (UKCC) programme, and act as the lead contact for player development and raise the overall profile of coaching.

Kenny Barton, CEO, Scottish Volleyball, said: ‘It is an exciting time for volleyball and for beach volleyball in the UK with 2012 preparations well underway. Additionally, the work over the past three years, with sportscotland’s support, has allowed the SVA to develop and consolidate the infrastructure of Scottish volleyball. This sportscotland funding is essential and extremely welcome as we continue to nurture all aspects of our sport.”

Julia Bracewell OBE, Chair, sportscotland, said: “I am delighted to announce £155,000 in sportscotland investment to the Scottish Volleyball Association.

“ The SVA is working hard to increase participation, improve its performance levels and build upon the number of trained volunteers in the sport and this is to be commended.”

  • The fast-growing Olympic sport of beach volleyball is embarking on the first-ever UK-wide ‘Urban Beach Tour’, bringing the country’s top-ranking players to Edinburgh’s Princes Street Gardens July 20 to 23.
  • The SVA has five Scottish Tour beach volleyball events this summer: Portobello (which took place June 17), St Andrews (which took place June 24/25), Broughty Ferry (August 5), Troon (August 12) and North Berwick (August 26).
