sportscotland rewards sporting organisations
Friday 2 February 2007
The Scottish Schoolsport Federation (SSF) will receive an investment of £50,000 that will go towards the administration of the ‘Teacher Release Scheme’. The Teacher Release Scheme supports teachers to enable them to accompany national squads and attend out of school hour’s competitions. This investment will also enable the SSF to continue its day to day work including its role to lobby on behalf of various Government agencies on core issues which surround school sport, and in particular sport in the “extended curriculum” in schools.
Scottish University Sport (SUS) is another organisation that will benefit with an investment of £30,000. This award will mainly be used to fund the existing two full-time positions of the Executive Officer and Sports Manager. SUS was formed in June 2005 with the objectives of ensuring quality and well-managed sporting programmes within the higher education sector, increasing and promoting involvement in physical activity, and aiding and supporting the development of professional structures and systems.
The third organisation to receive an investment of £24,500 is the Scottish Association of Local Sports Councils (SALSC). The investment will go towards a part-time Executive Administrator post and the administration support and costs associated with running the national ‘Local Service to Sport’ award scheme on sportscotland’s behalf.
SALSC is a voluntary body, established in the early eighties to represent the voice of community sports clubs. It has a membership of 69 local sports councils and related agencies, representing around 7,000 sports clubs in Scotland.
Julia Bracewell, OBE, Chair of sportscotland said: “I am pleased to announce the overall investment of £104,500 to these three key sporting organisations.
“sportscotland will work together with these organisations to help achieve the common goal of furthering the development of sport in Scotland through schools, clubs and the higher education sector.”
- The ‘Local Service to Sport’ award scheme is a recognition award given to sport volunteers throughout Scotland that belong to clubs that are affiliated to local sports councils. SALSC works in partnership with its member Local Sports Councils to manage the nomination and selection process.
