£1.2 million for grassroots sport

The Scottish Government is investing £1.2 million in grassroots sports facilities in West Lothian, Communities and Sport Minister Stewart Maxwell announced today.

Community led projects in Fauldhouse and Broxburn will benefit from a total of £1.2million, through sportscotland, to support the development of grassroots sport, increase participation and improve health and wellbeing across West Lothian.
Fauldhouse Community Campus will receive £700,000 towards new changing facilities and the modernisation of its swimming pool and sports hall. Broxburn United Sports Club will receive £500,000 towards a 10-team changing room pavilion and a third generation (3G) synthetic pitch. The new facilities will provide a hub for community sports activity.
This morning Mr Maxwell visited existing facilities at Fauldhouse Community Centre to meet young people who will benefit from this major investment in local sport.
Mr Maxwell said:
“This £1.2million investment will enable more people across West Lothian to access quality state-of-the-art facilities, where they can enjoy the benefits of exercise and sport.
“This is an exciting time for Scottish sport and this Government is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of all Scots through increasing participation and supporting the improvement of local facilities such as Fauldhouse Community Education Centre and Broxburn United’s Albyn Park.”
Councillor Peter Johnston, Leader of West Lothian Council, warmly welcomed the £1.2million investment announcement.
“This is a tremendous boost for community sport in West Lothian,” said Councillor Johnston.
“The projects at Fauldhouse and Broxburn will provide greatly improved facilities for local people which will allow them to take part and enjoy sporting activities.
“I am delighted that sportscotland is supporting both these exciting new community led projects with investment totalling £1.2million.”
Secretary of Broxburn United Sports Club (BUSC), Alan Cunningham, said:
“We are absolutely delighted to receive this award of £500,000.
“This funding, will provide the very latest technology synthetic turf pitch for our youth and adult football teams, as well as offering facilities for other recreational sports activities.
“This announcement helps deliver BUSC’s eight year vision of providing first class community facilities to the Broxburn, Uphall and Winchburgh public.”

- Fauldhouse Community Campus is a new community partnership complex offering a range of health, well-being and leisure services on one centrally located site. It will replace Fauldhouse Community Education Centre when it opens in 2008/09.
- The £700,000 investment in Fauldhouse will assist with the construction of new changing facilities as well as the extensive refurbishment of the existing 1970s three court sports hall and the upgrade of the 25m five lane swimming pool. Also planned is the creation of a new fitness suite and dance studio and two new changing rooms which will serve the existing 11-side pitch at the site.
- The investment of £500,000 is Broxburn United Sports Club (BUSC) to help provide a 10-team changing room pavilion and a third generation (3G) synthetic pitch at Albyn Park in the town. The new pavilion will also house a clubroom, physio room, officials room, office and storage space. BUSC was formed in 2000 to serve as one community club for the Broxburn area.
- Broxburn United has over 700 members representing local clubs including Broxburn Athletic, Broxburn Colts, Buchan Bowling Club, Uphall Station Amateurs and Uphall Diamonds.
