sportscotland celebrates sporting diversity

Friday, 12 December 2008

Sport and physical activity takes many forms and sportscotland celebrated that diversity today by announcing an investment package of over £100,000 in seven sporting organisations.

From dancesport to ju jitsu and hang gliding to fencing, sportscotland recognises the importance of supporting a broad range of sports across the country. The £105,500 investment announced today will support the mainly volunteer-led organisations as they continue their work providing sporting opportunities across Scotland.

Louise Martin CBE, Chair of sportscotland said: “As The National Agency for Sport, one of our most important roles is to encourage participation in sport in all its forms. While we celebrate sporting success we also recognise that for the majority of Scots, being fit and active is a much more realistic ambition.

“The funding announced today will support a range of organisations to ensure that there really is something for everyone, irrespective of age or ability.”

One of the organisations to benefit from a larger share of the investment is Scottish Universities Sport (SUS). A relatively new organisation, SUS is a real success story with membership from 16 out of Scotland’s 20 Universities, representing over 200,000 students.

sportscotland’s investment also funds two full-time posts within the organisation allowing SUS to operate a national competition programme including 90 events across 35 different sports.

With four of Scotland’s Universities included in the London 2012 Organising Committee’s Pre-Games Training Camp Guide, SUS will have an important role to play in the build-up to the Olympics in 2012 and of course the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.

The sports who will benefit from today’s announcement are:

  • Scottish Fencing - £58,000
  • Scottish Universities Sport - £35,000
  • Dancesport Scotland - £4,500
  • Scottish Ju Jitsu Association - £3,000
  • Scottish Croquet Association - £2,000
  • Fitness League - £2,000
  • Scottish Hang Gliding & Paragliding Federation - £1,000
