Member appointments to sportscotland board

The Minister for Public Health and Sport today announced the appointment of two members to the sportscotland Board.

Mr David Gass is a partner with Upper Quartile, an international management consultancy based in Edinburgh. Prior to this, he was a senior director with Scottish Enterprise, responsible for the South of Scotland region and SE’s economic development work across rural Scotland. A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, Mr Gass has worked in international trade development, with the University sector, and for the drinks industry.  He has always had a keen interest in sport and is involved in a number of sports clubs in his local community in the Scottish Borders.  Mr Gass has worked closely with the local authority sector in Scotland over the last 10 years, and brings a strong knowledge of the wider public sector network to the role.

Mr Rodney Stone has had professional involvement in sport spanning almost 35 years of managing sport for local authorities across Scotland. He is a former Chair of VOCAL, the professional body that represents senior officials who are responsible for sport and culture in local government. Over the last 15 years he has contributed to a range of national initiatives to develop sport through his involvement with VOCAL, COSLA, the Scottish Government and sportscotland. As well as his professional involvement in sport, he is a former athlete who competed at both club and international level for 20 years.  Mr Stone brings to the Board his insight and experience as a recreational participant, a serious competitor and a manager in the sporting arena. 

These appointments will be for 2 years and will run from 1 March 2011 to 28 February 2013.

These posts are part-time and attract a daily fee of £158 for a time commitment of around 16 days per year. 

Neither Mr Gass nor Mr Stone hold any other ministerial appointments.  

sportscotland is the national agency for sport in Scotland, who leads on the development of sport in Scotland.  Guided by Reaching Higher, the national strategy for sport, sportscotland work in partnership with key organisations such as Governing bodies and Local Authorities to increase participation and improve performances in Scottish sport.

sportscotland are a non-departmental public body, responsible to Scottish Government Ministers and are also a National Lottery Fund distributor.

These Ministerial public appointments were made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland’s Code of Practice.

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process.  However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity within the last 5 years (if there is any to be declared) to be made public.  Neither of the above re-appointees have been involved in any political activity.
