Member re-appointments to sportscotland board

The Minister for Public Health and Sport, Shona Robison MSP today announced the re-appointment of two members to the sportscotland Board.

Mr Graeme Marchbank is Head of Corporate Sponsorship and Events, Diageo, Global Corporate Relations. Following a career in golf administration including a spell as Director of Tour Operations with the Ladies European Tour and ultimately Director of Golf at the famous Gleneagles Hotel, venue for the 2014 Ryder Cup, Graeme was appointed to his current role with Diageo, the world's leading premium drinks business and owner of brands such as Johnnie Walker, Smirnoff and Guinness. Globally responsible for Diageo's corporate sponsorship strategy, Graeme's remit also includes the direction of major corporately motivated sponsorships and to focus on brand sponsorships in terms of corporate reputation and CSR.  Mr Marchbank brings to the Board his strong skills in strategy along with an acute knowledge of business activities and how these can be developed.

Mr David Sole currently has his own consultancy business where he advises senior executives across a diverse range of industries.  Prior to that he was head of the Leadership Development practice for Whitehead Mann. He has also worked for Diageo in a number of strategic roles. Mr Sole played international rugby for Scotland for seven years and toured with the British Lions and was inducted into the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.  Mr Sole brings to the Board his expertise of Schools and Governing Bodies.

These re-appointments will be for 4 years and will run from 22 January 2011 to 21 January 2015.

These posts are part-time and attract a daily fee of £158 for a time commitment of approximately 6 days per year. 

Mr Marchbank does not hold any other ministerial appointments.  Mr Sole will take up a position as a Member of Quality Meat Scotland in April 2011, for which he will receive a daily rate of £157.33.

  • Sportscotland is the national agency for developing sport in Scotland, dedicated to helping increase participation and improve performance in sport.  The organisation works with and brings together key organisations in Scottish sport, such as Governing Bodies and Local Authorities, supporting them in delivering their single plan for sport and investing National Lottery and Scottish Government funding in the shared outcomes which contribute to the National Strategy for Sport – Reaching Higher.
  • These Ministerial public appointments were made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland’s Code of Practice.
  • All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process.  However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity within the last 5 years (if there is any to be declared) to be made public.  Neither of the above re-appointees have been involved in any political activity.
