North Inch Campus, Perth, 5.30pm, 26th April

Perth & Kinross Sport Development team have launched their ‘Ultimate Sport Leaders’ programme (USL) which will promote positive youth and volunteering through sport.  USL is part of a nationwide pilot scheme championed by sportscotland to support the creation of long-term volunteering pathways in sport as Scotland looks to enhance its sporting future towards 2014 and beyond. Perth & Kinross Council were selected alongside Glasgow, Edinburgh and Grampian region to pilot the project.

Hilary Templeton, Lead Manager for volunteering at sportscotland said:  Volunteers are the lifeblood of Scottish sport, and with the Commonwealth Games in 2014 the need for, and importance of, volunteers has never been greater.  Through this programme we hope to motivate and inspire young people to volunteer in sport, giving them the skills and experience they need to develop their own sporting experience while delivering a whole new generation of volunteers to drive the development of sport in Scotland.”

Ultimate Sport Leaders involves 11 selected young people (14-21years) from across the Perth and Kinross region. The young sport leaders are required to complete volunteering placements linked to local schools and sport clubs; with a minimum commitment of 60hours over the year.

The Perth & Kinross team represent 9 different sports from gymnastics to kickboxing!  The USL programme is designed to recognise active youth whilst providing a pathway into clubs and an opportunity to gain invaluable experience for those interested in a career in sport. Each young leader is supported by an individual mentor to ensure they meet their goals throughout the year and continue to benefit from the opportunities that are available to them.

“Young people represent the future of sport in Perth and Kinross. This is especially true in terms of leadership where Perth and Kinross is blessed with exceptionally talented young people who are giving a massive amount of time to coach, umpire, manage and administer sport. The Ultimate Sports Leaders’ programme will help support a number of these young people to develop their skills and realise their potential as our sports leaders of the future.” (Alan Clark, Sport Development Manager)
