Each local authority is responsible for developing, implementing and managing Active Schools within their area, and ensuring that Active Schools is integrated within planning for sport, health and education.
Active Schools Managers and Coordinators are directly employed by local authorities and, together with sportscotland, local authorities jointly fund Network posts. Managers and Coordinators also work closely with their colleagues in sports development to ensure that their efforts are coordinated.
Active Schools is a key element of the Scottish Government’s drive to get more Scots more active, a commitment outlined in the National Physical Activity Strategy. Active Schools is also referenced throughout the Scottish Government’s national strategy for sport, Reaching Higher.
Through sportscotland, the Scottish Government contributes £12 million per annum to the running of the Active Schools Network.
sportscotland developed the original concepts for Schools Sport Coordinator and Active Primary School Coordinator programmes, which in turn evolved into the Active Schools Network. sportscotland manages, develops, supports and monitors the Network at a national level and developed the 2008-2011 planning framework which informs the work of Active Schools.
