Progress To Date

Since its launch in 2004, the Active Schools Network has had a significant catalytic impact in schools across Scotland.  Below are just a selection of the key achievements in the ‘first phase’ of Active Schools:

  • By the end of year three, the number of schools involved in Active Schools has almost doubled since the end of year one.  Today, there are now just under 2,500 schools involved in Active Schools.
  • At the end of year three, the Network consisted of over 680 staff – an increase from 355 in year one*.
  • Average activity sessions per school have increased by 30% since year one.  By far the largest gains have been made in primary schools, where average activity sessions per school have increased by over 50%.
  • Average session leaders per school have increased by over 50% since year one.  Over 50% of sessions leaders are volunteers.
  • Over 60 different activities were recorded through Active Schools in a single term in year three.  Sessions cover an extensive range of interests from sports like rugby and hockey to activities like Scottish dance and organised playground games.

At the outset of the Network in 2004, sportscotland commissioned a consortium of researchers led by Loughborough University – the Loughborough Partnership – to carry out an evaluation of our investment in the Network over the three year period from 2004–2007.  Their published reports are available to view in the resource library.
