Becoming a coach

Coaching can be very rewarding, for yourself and for others. Whether you want to be a professional coach or a volunteer, there are a number of ways to get into coaching.

Get qualified

To become a qualified coach in a particular sport you need to take the relevant coaching qualifications offered by the Scottish Governing body. You can contact them to request details of their coaching awards and dates of courses running in your area.

Many of Scotland’s universities and colleges offer a range of sports courses at various levels. Entry is usually decided on the basis of your ability and commitment to sport as well as your academic ability.

Get experience

Probably the most important thing is experience. You can get started by assisting qualified coaches at your local sports club, school or university.
