In addition to these publications, we can also provide more specific guidance on your project if requested.  Our multi-disciplinary team has expertise in the design, construction and management of a whole range of sports facilities as well as experience in disability access.

Swimming Pool Water Treatment and quality standards for pools and spas

One of sportscotland's aims is to promote good practice in the design and running of sports facilities. In pursuit of this aim sportscotland is a member of the independent body the Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group [PWTAG] which is made up of leading experts and players in the treatment of swimming pool water.

The latest edition of guidance titled Swimming Pool Water Treatment and quality standards for pools and spas was published earlier this year



A designer’s guide to underfloor heating in sports halls

This report considers the design issues of providing underfloor heating, a feature which can have environmental benefits if correctly designed and integrated with other environmental services. It aims to provide the designer with sufficient information to help make key decisions about providing underfloor heating alongside other alternatives.



Energy-saving and access systems in community sports facilities

This report presents the findings of a study to evaluate the benefits of installing energy-saving and access systems to a community sports facility at Guildtown, Perthshire.  It provides useful guidance for those designing and operating sports facilities.



Design Guidance for Secondary School Sports Facilities

sportscotland published this guide that aims to help local authorities provide quality school sports facilities suitable for both school and wider community use and will assist both designers and education authorities.



Design Guidance for Primary School Sports Facilities

This design guidance supplements the ‘Secondary School Sports Facilities: Designing for School and Community Use’.  It provides advice on the number and type of spaces required by primary schools of a range of sizes and factors to consider when designing these spaces.  The document also highlights the contribution new and refurbished primary schools can make to meeting the sporting needs of communities.



School Playing Fields - Planning and Design Guidance

This document is a useful tool to assist designers and education authorities to make proper provision for outdoor PE and sport at primary and secondary schools. It details a model for calculating the playing fields required for a range of school sizes as well as giving technical advice on dimensions, layout, construction and maintenance.



National Audit of Scotland's Sports Facilities - Summary Report

The main objectives of the audit were to establish the general condition of Scotland’s sports facilities; to estimate where necessary the capital cost of bringing them up to an acceptable standard; and to estimate the costs of maintaining them in an acceptable condition.



Charges for Sports Facilities

sportscotland conducts an annual review of local authority charges for sports participation in Scotland. The main aim of the review was to produce a straightforward, factual and up-to-date Digest summarising the level of charges for the most popular sports facilities and activities in Scotland.  Previous reviews are also included.

Facilities Planning Model

sportscotland developed a Facilities Planning Model (FPM) as a planning tool to inform decisions about the provision of community sports facilities. A number of local authorities have commissioned sportscotland to run the model to assist with facility planning for their areas. The Government’s planning advice for sport, physical recreation and open space (SPP 11) advises councils to take account of the FPM in assessing levels of provision of sports facilities appropriate for their area.



Mountain bike training facility report

This report details the design and construction of a mountain bike training facility developed at sportscotland's national centre Glenmore Lodge.  In addition to providing development details, the report highlights lessons and best practice learned from the project.
