Body Text

Active Schools builds on the early successes of the original School Sport Co-ordinator and Active Primary School Co-ordinator Programmes introduced by sportscotland in 1999.

Since this time, sportscotland has been responsible for:

  • The introduction of the Active Schools Primary School pilot programme across 21 local authorities and involving 290 primary schools
  • Establishing a School Sport Co-ordinator programme in 350 secondary schools
  • The introduction of the Youth Sport Trust’s TOP Play and TOP Sport programmes across 32 local authorities
  • The introduction of the Out of Schools Hours Learning/School Sport Co-ordinator programme, in partnership with the BIG Lottery Fund
  • The appointment of a Programme Manager in 11 local authorities
  • The establishment of the Sporting Champions programme.

These programmes have since been realigned and integrated into a comprehensive whole schools approach to physical activity. This approach is part of the national target of making every school a Health Promoting School by 2007.
